Five Earth Science Students Receive Awards for Academic Excellence

SUNY Oneonta recognized five students for academic excellence at the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences' annual Majors' Night in October. Now in its 38th year, Majors' Night offers the department's undergraduates the opportunity to network with alumni who return to campus for the event, where they share their experiences and offer advice to current students.

Alanna Bergstrom Wins SUNY Leadership Award

SUNY Oneonta junior Alanna Bergstrom, an environmental science major from Staten Island, has been chosen to receive the SUNY Emerging Leaders Award. The award recognizes students who have demonstrated significant leadership within their campuses and/or communities. Recipients attended the SUNY Student Leadership Institute from Oct. 17-19 in Rochester.

34 SUNY Oneonta Students Studying Abroad in Fall 2014

A total of 34 SUNY Oneonta students are studying abroad this fall through semester-long and academic-year programs in 11 countries. SUNY Oneonta offers exchange programs in Ghana, Ecuador, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan through the Office of International Education, plus a variety of short-term, faculty-led programs. Oneonta students also have access to more than 600 study abroad programs through the SUNY network.

Approximately 560 new transfer students will continue their studies at SUNY Oneonta this fall. Classes started Monday, Aug. 25. The SUNY Oneonta fall 2014 transfer class has an average cumulative grade-point average of 3.2.

1,100 Freshmen Enroll at SUNY Oneonta

Approximately 1,100 new freshmen, selected from 11,589 applicants, will begin their studies at SUNY Oneonta this fall. Classes start on Monday, Aug. 25. The SUNY Oneonta Class of 2018 has an average high school grade-point average of 91 and an average combined math and critical reading SAT score of 1127.

Five SUNY Oneonta Students Selected to Serve as Transfer Student Mentors

Five SUNY Oneonta students have been selected to serve as Transfer Student Mentors (TSMs) for the 2014-2015 academic year. Transfer Student Mentors lead programs and work closely with transfer students living in the Hulbert Hall T-Side wing. TSMs also assist with the Transfer Committee, which meets monthly to hear and address transfer students' concerns, and with Transfers Take The Lead, a series of programs and events designed to get transfer students engaged in LEAD@Oneonta programming.

14 SUNY Oneonta Students Selected to Serve as Very Influential Peers

Fourteen SUNY Oneonta students have been selected to serve as Very Influential Peers (VIPs) for the 2014-2015 academic year. VIPs work with freshmen who live in the college's First Year Experience (FYE) residence halls or are enrolled in the First Year Seminar. Their role in the seminar is to reinforce messages from the professor, to serve as a peer mentor, and to provide information about college life. They also assist with the Freshman 15, a program series exclusively for new students.

20 SUNY Oneonta Students Selected to Serve as Orientation Leaders

Twenty SUNY Oneonta students have been selected to serve as Orientation Leaders for the 2014-2015 academic year. In addition to leading activities for new students and their parents during 10 summer orientation sessions, Orientation Leaders welcome new students into their new community by leading small groups, answering questions about the college and college life, and mentoring new students through the first few weeks of the semester.

Michael Morales Competes in Drum Corps International World Championships

While many college students are spending the summer waiting tables, working as interns or perfecting their tans, SUNY Oneonta junior Michael Morales has been marching to the beat of a different drum. Morales, a music industry major from Warwick, N.Y., is touring the country with Drum Corps International (DCI), a competitive league of drum and bugle corps marching ensembles that presents choreographed musical performances at venues ranging from high school football fields to NFL stadiums.

74 SUNY Oneonta student athletes were named to the State University of New York Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the spring 2014 semester. To be eligible, a student must be a varsity athlete who has completed the entire season and earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.3 for the semester in which they competed. Victoria Panyu to Present Fashion Research at Textiles Conference

Fashion research conducted by SUNY Oneonta senior Victoria Panyu has been accepted for presentation at the 2014 International Textiles & Apparel Association (ITAA) conference. Panyu, a fashion and textiles major/business communication minor from Staten Island, conducted research on online-only fashion retailers in collaboration with Dr. Hyejune Park, assistant professor of Fashion & Textiles.

Lauren Zimmardi Wins National Geography Award

Recent SUNY Oneonta graduate Lauren Zimmardi of Middle Island, NY, has received a national award for excellence in geography. Zimmardi, who graduated with honors in May, majored in Geography and Early Childhood/Childhood Education (B-6). She was one of 21 students from colleges and universities across the country chosen by university faculty as the best all-around undergraduate student geography scholars in an awards program sponsored by the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE).

Marvin Rodriguez Chosen for SUNY Brain Summer Scholars Program

SUNY Oneonta junior Marvin Rodriguez is one of 13 SUNY students selected to participate in the first SUNY Brain Summer Scholars Program, part of the SUNY Brain Network of Excellence. Research conducted by students this summer will support President Obama's Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative, which aims to increase understanding of how the brain works in order to develop new ways to treat, cure, and even prevent brain disorders.
