The following students were named to the SUNY Oneonta Provost's List for the spring 2013 semester. Of the more than 5,800 undergraduates enrolled at the college, 140 qualified for the spring 2013 Provost's List by earning a perfect GPA while carrying a course load of at least 12 semester hours.

SUNY Oneonta inducted 13 students inducted into its chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma during a ceremony on April 26. Students ranking in the top 10 percent of baccalaureate programs and the top 20 percent of graduate programs at schools accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business are eligible for this invitation. Only the best business students in the world, and the professionals who have earned the distinction of "the Best in Business" during their academic careers, can claim membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, which has collegiate chapters on six continents. The 13 SUNY Oneonta students who earned invitations during the 2012-2013 academic year join an expanding worldwide network of more than 625,000 outstanding business professionals who have earned recognition through lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. The following SUNY Oneonta students earned invitations to join were inducted into the SUNY Oneonta chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma on April 26. A total of 92 students were inducted into the SUNY Oneonta chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honor society for college freshmen, during a ceremony in the Sanford Auditorium of the college's Instructional Resource Center on Sunday, May 5. With 330 chapters nationwide, Phi Eta Sigma promotes excellence through recognition programs and scholarship competitions. New members qualify by achieving grade-point averages of at least 3.5 during their first year in college. Phi Eta Sigma, one of the longest-standing freshman honor societies in the country, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Chartered in 1994, the SUNY Oneonta chapter is advised by Dr. Kenneth Johnson, Associate Professor of Geography. The induction ceremony was conducted by Dr. Kenneth Johnson, Faculty Advisor; Katie Sheehan, Chapter President; Allison Ryley, Vice President; Carrie Safford, Secretary; and Kimberly Brooks, Treasurer. The guest speaker was Dr. Steven Perry, Vice President for Student Development. Each inductee was awarded a certificate and a membership key issued by the national headquarters of Phi Eta Sigma. SUNY Oneonta honored 16 student artists during a reception on April 18 in the college's Martin-Mullen Art Gallery. More than 100 works by student artists were on display April 15 through May 18 during the college's Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition exhibition, which featured sculpture, ceramics, digital prints, drawings, paintings and video art. The Dr. James Jerow Elting Memorial Awards were presented at a reception for the artists. The following students received awards:

Three SUNY Oneonta students were among the 29 students from across the country selected to present papers during the 18th annual SUNY Oneonta Undergraduate Philosophy Conference from April 12-13. During the conference, which featured a keynote address by author and activist Carol Adams, students presented papers on topics ranging from "Corporation's Fulfillment of Conditions of Personhood" to "Science and Miracles." Along with three students from SUNY Oneonta, the conference featured presenters from a wide variety of institutions, including Penn State University, the University of Toronto and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The following SUNY Oneonta students presented their scholarly work at the 18th annual SUNY Oneonta Undergraduate Philosophy Conference:

The SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team finished in 10th place out of 59 teams from across the country after making it to the semifinal round of a national collegiate poetry slam tournament in April. The SUNY Oneonta slammers faced off against teams from Stanford University, Wesleyan University, University of California-Berkeley and Virginia Commonwealth University during a semifinal bout in the 2013 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) at Barnard College on April 5. Hosted by the Association of College Unions International, CUPSI is the only licensed poetry slam tournament bringing college students together to showcase their talents in the competitive art of performance poetry. During the four-day tournament, more than 400 poets representing 59 colleges and universities from across the United States attended workshops and competed for top honors in collegiate performance poetry. This year's event marked the highest attendance in history. The following students were members of the 2013 SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team:

A total of 62 SUNY Oneonta student athletes were named to the State University of New York Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the fall 2012 semester. To be eligible, a student must be a varsity athlete who has completed the entire season and earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.3 for the semester in which they competed. SUNY Oneonta recognized 15 student athletes inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during a luncheon held in celebration of National Student Athlete Day and NCAA Division III Week on April 11.To qualify for induction into Chi Alpha Sigma, a student must have achieved at least junior standing with a cumulative 3.4 grade point average while earning a varsity letter in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Each student athlete must also be of good moral character and have the endorsement of both the head coach of his or her sport and the chapter president.The following students were inducted into SUNY Oneonta's chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma:

Sixteen SUNY Oneonta students were recognized at the 2013 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 24-28. More than 3,000 students representing 150-plus colleges and universities from almost 30 countries participated in the conference. This year's SUNY Oneonta delegation, representing Croatia, was one of 29 groups from around the world selected to receive the Distinguished Delegation Award at the end of the conference. This is a high honor, placing the Oneonta delegation in the top 10 percent of participants. Over the course of the spring semester, students prepared for the simulation by learning about Croatia's international and domestic politics, contemporary issues, and the United Nations' committee system and operating procedures. While in New York City, the students received a briefing from the Permanent Mission of Croatia to the United Nations. Once at the conference, they debated proposals put forth to address these issues from the perspective of diplomats of their assigned country. Six SUNY Oneonta students were among the 22 student scholars selected to present papers at SUNY Oneonta's fifth annual Undergraduate Political Science Conference on Friday, March 15. The daylong conference included a keynote address by Dr. Kristi Andersen, Professor of Political Science at The Maxwell School of Syracuse University, and 22 student presentations on topics ranging from the Oslo Accords to workers' rights.

The following local residents are among the 307 students who graduated from SUNY Oneonta following the fall 2012 semester. The college's commencement ceremony was held on Sunday, Dec. 2.

Four SUNY Oneonta business students were invited to join the SUNY Oneonta chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma during the fall 2012 semester. The following local residents were part of a 16-member SUNY Oneonta student delegation recognized with an Honorable Mention Award at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from April 1- 5. The conference attracted over 2,000 students representing more than 100 colleges and universities from around the world, and only the top 10 percent of participants achieved this recognition.

Area residents earned a perfect grade point average of 4.0 during the fall 2011 semester at SUNY Oneonta and have been named to the college's Provost's List. Of the more than 5,800 undergraduates enrolled at the college, 124 qualified for the fall 2011 Provost's List by earning a perfect GPA while carrying a course load of at least 12 semester hours.

Area residents were among the 281 students who graduated from SUNY Oneonta following the fall 2011 semester. Graduates were honored at a December recognition ceremony hosted by College President Nancy Kleniewski and held in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. They also are eligible to participate in the college's commencement on May 19.

SUNY Oneonta was extremely well represented at the annual conference of the Geological Society of America held in Minneapolis earlier this week. Thirteen students and five members of the college's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences faculty were invited to present their research at the event. Distinguished Teaching Professor James Ebert, chair of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, said the size of the delegation, though unusual, reflects the high level of quality among SUNY Oneonta students' scholarly work. "It's far from typical for so many undergraduates from a single department to present at any conference, especially the national conference of one of the preeminent geoscience societies," said Ebert. "This is an unbelievably powerful experience for our students and provides a significant jumpstart to their careers as professional geoscientists. We are extremely proud of them."
