SUNY Oneonta inducted 12 students into its Edward K. Griesmer chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary, a branch of the National Association of Colleges and University Residence Halls, in November 2013. Made up of the top 1 percent of student leaders on campus, NRHH recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to the residence hall community.

15 SUNY Oneonta Students Inducted into Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society

SUNY Oneonta inducted 15 students into its Beta Eta Chapter of the Chi Alpha Epsilon national honor society during a ceremony on November 14. Members of Chi Alpha Epsilon are Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students who have held a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher for at least two consecutive semesters. Each inductee pledges "to continue to excel academically, promote academic excellence in others and to assist those who genuinely aspire to the same goals."

SUNY Oneonta Team Advances to College Fed Challenge Semifinals

A team of students from SUNY Oneonta will compete in the semifinal round of the 2013 College Fed Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday, Nov. 18. Teams from 36 schools in the Second District competed in the first round of the competition at John Jay College on Nov. 5, and the SUNY Oneonta contingent bested teams from the five other schools in its bracket to advance to the semifinals.

SUNY Oneonta Students Organize Fashion for Food Fundraiser for Food Pantry

Three SUNY Oneonta event planning students organized a benefit fashion show that raised more than $1,000 for a local food pantry. More than 120 people attended the "Fashion for Food" fundraiser on Nov. 8 at the Oneonta Elks Club. The event included a pasta dinner prepared and served by Food Service and Restaurant Administration students, followed by the fashion show where students modeled outfits culled from the racks of a local consignment store, as well as some of their own creations.

Chris Mackin Directs SUNY Oneonta Production of "No Exit"

Chris Mackin of Merrick, N.Y., made his collegiate directorial debut on Oct. 31, opening night of the Mask and Hammer theatre club's production of "No Exit" at SUNY Oneonta. An existential drama written by French philosopher and playwright Jean-Paul Sartre, "No Exit" ran from Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in SUNY Oneonta's Hamblin Theater. Mackin is a junior majoring in theatre at SUNY Oneonta.

SUNY Oneonta Student Wins Economics Paper Competition

SUNY Oneonta senior Julia Fremante of Guilderland, N.Y., is the winner of the 2013 New York State Economics Association (NYSEA) Undergraduate Student Paper Competition. A business economics major with a concentration in finance, Fremante was one of six students chosen to present papers during the NYSEA's 66th Annual Meeting at Farmingdale State College from Oct. 4-5.

Record Number of Students Take Part in SUNY Oneonta's Freshman Service Day

A record number of SUNY Oneonta freshmen spent their first full day in Oneonta volunteering in the community. New students moved into their residence halls on Sunday, Aug. 25, and 202 of them participated in the college's sixth annual Freshman Service Day the next day.

12 SUNY Oneonta Freshmen Receive Scholarships Through New Program

Twelve SUNY Oneonta freshmen have been selected to participate in "Critical MaSS: Math and Science Scholars," a new scholarship program supporting students who plan to pursue careers or advanced degree programs in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Each student received a $2,700 scholarship award for the Fall 2013 semester. If they continue to meet program criteria, they will receive a similar scholarship each semester, totaling up to eight, while they are STEM majors at SUNYOneonta. In addition to the scholarships (up to $21,600 per student), Critical MaSS scholars will have access to a variety of experiences to bolster their chances of academic success and increase their level of engagement. For example, during their junior year, each scholar will be awarded up to $1,500 to fund a research project or professional development activity, such as attending a scientific meeting. 1,100 New Students Enroll at SUNY Oneonta

Approximately 1,100 new students, selected from more than 12,000 applicants, began their studies at SUNY Oneonta this fall. Classes began on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The SUNY Oneonta Class of 2017 is exceptionally talented and diverse, said Roger Sullivan, the college's associate vice president for enrollment management. The freshman class has an average high school grade-point average of 91 and an average combined math and critical reading SAT score of 1135. Acceptances of AALANA (African American, Latino, Asian and Native American) students were up 11.3% this year, and for the first time, AALANA students accounted for 1 in 5 new freshmen and transfer students. Top SUNY Oneonta Business Students Inducted Into International Honor Society

SUNY Oneonta inducted 13 students inducted into its chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma during a ceremony on April 26. Students ranking in the top 10 percent of baccalaureate programs and the top 20 percent of graduate programs at schools accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business are eligible for this invitation. Only the best business students in the world, and the professionals who have earned the distinction of "the Best in Business" during their academic careers, can claim membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, which has collegiate chapters on six continents. The 13 SUNY Oneonta students who earned invitations during the 2012-2013 academic year join an expanding worldwide network of more than 625,000 outstanding business professionals who have earned recognition through lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. 92 Students Inducted Into SUNY Oneonta Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma

A total of 92 students were inducted into the SUNY Oneonta chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honor society for college freshmen, during a ceremony in the Sanford Auditorium of the college's Instructional Resource Center on Sunday, May 5. With 330 chapters nationwide, Phi Eta Sigma promotes excellence through recognition programs and scholarship competitions. New members qualify by achieving grade-point averages of at least 3.5 during their first year in college. Phi Eta Sigma, one of the longest-standing freshman honor societies in the country, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Chartered in 1994, the SUNY Oneonta chapter is advised by Dr. Kenneth Johnson, Associate Professor of Geography. The induction ceremony was conducted by Dr. Kenneth Johnson, Faculty Advisor; Katie Sheehan, Chapter President; Allison Ryley, Vice President; Carrie Safford, Secretary; and Kimberly Brooks, Treasurer. The guest speaker was Dr. Steven Perry, Vice President for Student Development. Each inductee was awarded a certificate and a membership key issued by the national headquarters of Phi Eta Sigma. 16 SUNY Oneonta Student Artists Receive Awards

SUNY Oneonta honored 16 student artists during a reception on April 18 in the college's Martin-Mullen Art Gallery. More than 100 works by student artists were on display April 15 through May 18 during the college's Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition exhibition, which featured sculpture, ceramics, digital prints, drawings, paintings and video art. The Dr. James Jerow Elting Memorial Awards were presented at a reception for the artists. The following students received awards:

Three SUNY Oneonta Students Present Papers at 18th Annual Undergraduate Philosophy Conference

Three SUNY Oneonta students were among the 29 students from across the country selected to present papers during the 18th annual SUNY Oneonta Undergraduate Philosophy Conference from April 12-13. During the conference, which featured a keynote address by author and activist Carol Adams, students presented papers on topics ranging from "Corporation's Fulfillment of Conditions of Personhood" to "Science and Miracles." Along with three students from SUNY Oneonta, the conference featured presenters from a wide variety of institutions, including Penn State University, the University of Toronto and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team Reaches Semifinals of National Tournament

The SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team finished in 10th place out of 59 teams from across the country after making it to the semifinal round of a national collegiate poetry slam tournament in April. The SUNY Oneonta slammers faced off against teams from Stanford University, Wesleyan University, University of California-Berkeley and Virginia Commonwealth University during a semifinal bout in the 2013 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) at Barnard College on April 5. Hosted by the Association of College Unions International, CUPSI is the only licensed poetry slam tournament bringing college students together to showcase their talents in the competitive art of performance poetry. During the four-day tournament, more than 400 poets representing 59 colleges and universities from across the United States attended workshops and competed for top honors in collegiate performance poetry. 62 SUNY Oneonta Student Athletes Named to All-Academic Team

A total of 62 SUNY Oneonta student athletes were named to the State University of New York Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the fall 2012 semester. To be eligible, a student must be a varsity athlete who has completed the entire season and earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.3 for the semester in which they competed.
