SUNY Oneonta senior Jill Massey will sing Johannes Brahms' choral masterwork "Ein deutsches Requiem" as a chorister with the Philharmonia Chorus on Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Massey, a music major from Bloomville, N.Y., and a 2010 graduate of South Kortright Central School, submitted a video audition in December after being encouraged by Associate Professor of Music Timothy Newton, who will also be singing in the performance.

Lisa Ceccato of Levittown, NY, was selected as the second recipient of SUNY Oneonta's new 30th Anniversary College at Oneonta Foundation Scholarship. Created in 2012 to celebrate the college's strong tradition of philanthropy and expand study abroad opportunities for SUNY Oneonta students, the scholarship is awarded to one student each fall.

The following local residents are among the 327 students who graduated from SUNY Oneonta following the Fall 2013 semester. Graduates were honored at a December recognition ceremony hosted by College President Nancy Kleniewski and held in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. They also are eligible to participate in the college's commencement on May 17.

SUNY Oneonta senior Christy Harasimowicz of Jefferson, NY, has won a SUNY-wide essay contest sponsored by Gale Cengage for her essay "Samuel Richardson's Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded: Justification of Masculine Activity and the Avenue to Virtue." Three awards were offered, and Harasimowicz won for the best undergraduate essay using the new Eighteenth-Century Collections Online (ECCO) database.

A total of 28 student volunteers from SUNY Oneonta's School of Economics and Business have become certified by the IRS to help families prepare simple tax forms through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Residents of Delaware and Otsego counties who earned less than $51,000 in 2013 may be eligible for this free service, which is offered through the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

A total of 153 SUNY Oneonta students earned Provost's List honors for the fall 2013 semester. To qualify for the Provost's List, students must earn a perfect 4.0 GPA while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more.

SUNY Oneonta recently recognized students who achieved certification in the college's Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program during the fall 2013 semester. LEAD@Oneonta is a comprehensive leadership program based on current research and guidelines from the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.

SUNY Oneonta inducted 12 students into its Edward K. Griesmer chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary, a branch of the National Association of Colleges and University Residence Halls, in November 2013. Made up of the top 1 percent of student leaders on campus, NRHH recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to the residence hall community.

SUNY Oneonta inducted 15 students into its Beta Eta Chapter of the Chi Alpha Epsilon national honor society during a ceremony on November 14. Members of Chi Alpha Epsilon are Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students who have held a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher for at least two consecutive semesters. Each inductee pledges "to continue to excel academically, promote academic excellence in others and to assist those who genuinely aspire to the same goals."

Three SUNY Oneonta event planning students organized a benefit fashion show that raised more than $1,000 for a local food pantry. More than 120 people attended the "Fashion for Food" fundraiser on Nov. 8 at the Oneonta Elks Club. The event included a pasta dinner prepared and served by Food Service and Restaurant Administration students, followed by the fashion show where students modeled outfits culled from the racks of a local consignment store, as well as some of their own creations.

A team of students from SUNY Oneonta will compete in the semifinal round of the 2013 College Fed Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday, Nov. 18. Teams from 36 schools in the Second District competed in the first round of the competition at John Jay College on Nov. 5, and the SUNY Oneonta contingent bested teams from the five other schools in its bracket to advance to the semifinals.

Chris Mackin of Merrick, N.Y., made his collegiate directorial debut on Oct. 31, opening night of the Mask and Hammer theatre club's production of "No Exit" at SUNY Oneonta. An existential drama written by French philosopher and playwright Jean-Paul Sartre, "No Exit" ran from Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in SUNY Oneonta's Hamblin Theater. Mackin is a junior majoring in theatre at SUNY Oneonta.

SUNY Oneonta senior Julia Fremante of Guilderland, N.Y., is the winner of the 2013 New York State Economics Association (NYSEA) Undergraduate Student Paper Competition. A business economics major with a concentration in finance, Fremante was one of six students chosen to present papers during the NYSEA's 66th Annual Meeting at Farmingdale State College from Oct. 4-5.

SUNY Oneonta announced the winners of endowed scholarships given each year to students within the college's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Recipients were honored at the department's 37th annual Majors' Night on Oct. 9.

A record number of SUNY Oneonta freshmen spent their first full day in Oneonta volunteering in the community. New students moved into their residence halls on Sunday, Aug. 25, and 202 of them participated in the college's sixth annual Freshman Service Day the next day.

Twelve SUNY Oneonta freshmen have been selected to participate in "Critical MaSS: Math and Science Scholars," a new scholarship program supporting students who plan to pursue careers or advanced degree programs in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Each student received a $2,700 scholarship award for the Fall 2013 semester. If they continue to meet program criteria, they will receive a similar scholarship each semester, totaling up to eight, while they are STEM majors at SUNYOneonta. In addition to the scholarships (up to $21,600 per student), Critical MaSS scholars will have access to a variety of experiences to bolster their chances of academic success and increase their level of engagement. For example, during their junior year, each scholar will be awarded up to $1,500 to fund a research project or professional development activity, such as attending a scientific meeting. Approximately 1,100 new students, selected from more than 12,000 applicants, began their studies at SUNY Oneonta this fall. Classes began on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The SUNY Oneonta Class of 2017 is exceptionally talented and diverse, said Roger Sullivan, the college's associate vice president for enrollment management. The freshman class has an average high school grade-point average of 91 and an average combined math and critical reading SAT score of 1135. Acceptances of AALANA (African American, Latino, Asian and Native American) students were up 11.3% this year, and for the first time, AALANA students accounted for 1 in 5 new freshmen and transfer students. A total of 45 SUNY Oneonta students received 2013 Senior Service Awards recognizing their commitment to volunteerism. Seniors who completed at least 350 hours of service through the college's Center for Social Responsibility and Community (CSRC) were recognized during a reception on May 17.
