Exhibition Features Artwork by Scholarship Recipients

Artwork by three SUNY Oneonta students and two recent graduates is featured in a new exhibition in the college's Project Space Gallery. "Student Recipient Exhibition, Jean Parish Memorial Scholarship 2015-2016" opened Sept. 6 and runs through Sept. 30.

New Students Get Field Experience Through GEOFYRST

Ten students participated in GEOFYRST (Geologic Experience Outdoors: the First Year Regional Summer Trip), SUNY Oneonta's six-day pre-semester geology field trip for new students, from Aug. 18-24. Now in its10th year, GEOFYRST gives freshmen their first real field experience--and a chance to bond with other new students, faculty and upperclassmen while hiking, setting up tents and roasting marshmallows.

New Students Receive Merit Scholarships

More than 200 new freshman, transfer and international students have been awarded merit scholarships to attend SUNY Oneonta beginning in the fall 2016 semester. The award amounts range from $1,000 to full in-state tuition scholarships of $6,470 per year.

Students Explore Hudson River from Source to Sea

Thirteen students studied the Hudson River from source to sea during a unique pre-semester field experience from Aug. 21-27. Led by Michael Koch, associate professor of philosophy, and Tyra Olstad, assistant professor of geography and environmental sustainability, the group camped, hiked and paddled in and around the Hudson, starting in the Adirondacks and ending in New York City.

SUNY Oneonta Welcomes New Red Dragons

This fall, SUNY Oneonta will welcome approximately 1,100 freshmen and 600 new transfer students hailing from across New York, as well as from 12 other states and countries. New students moved in on Aug. 24, and the fall 2016 semester starts Aug. 29. Our newest Red Dragons will officially join the Oneonta family when they walk through the historic pillars of Old Main during the traditional Pass Through the Pillars ceremony on the campus quad the night before classes begin.

More than 1,000 Students Honored at 127th Commencement

More than 1,000 graduates were recognized at SUNY Oneonta's 127th commencement on May 14, 2016. Students who completed the requirements for bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and certificates of advanced study participated in three main ceremonies in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. Broadway producer Hal Luftig (1979) and set designer Neil Mazzella (1973) addressed the graduates and received honorary doctorates.

SUNY Oneonta recognized 54 outstanding students during an Academic Achievement Awards reception on May 4. One to three students were chosen from each of the college's academic departments and programs to receive the 2016 Academic Achievement Awards. Each student selected one faculty guest to accompany them to the recognition event.

Students Travel to Bolivia for Service-Learning Activities

Twenty-two SUNY Oneonta students are spending part of their summer volunteering in Bolivian schools through a unique faculty-led field course in collaboration with Save the Children International. Accompanied by Brett Heindl, associate professor of political science, and Alejandra Escudero, lecturer in Spanish, the students will spend two weeks immersing themselves in Bolivian culture and doing service-learning projects in elementary schools, high schools and in the Save the Children offices.

Geology Student Wins Paleontology Research Grants

Lyndsey Farrar is doing research at the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) in Ithaca, NY, this summer after receiving two competitive student research grants. Farrar, a SUNY Oneonta senior majoring in geology, received The John W. Wells Grant, awarded by PRI, and The Allison R. "Pete" Palmer Award, awarded by the Paleontological Society. Both grants were awarded through national competitions.

Thirty-Nine Students Recognized for Community Service

Thirty-nine members of the Class of 2016 received Senior Service Awards in recognition of their outstanding commitment to volunteerism while at SUNY Oneonta. Students who completed at least 350 hours of service through the college's Center for Social Responsibility and Community (CSRC) were recognized during a reception on May 13.

CGP Student Wins First Place at Regional Business Competition

SUNY Oneonta graduate student Kwasi Agyemang represented the Mohawk Valley in the state finals of the seventh annual New York Business Plan Competition (NYBPC) on April 29 in Albany. Agyemang, who will graduate May 14 with a Master of Arts degree in History Museum Studies from SUNY Oneonta's Cooperstown Graduate Program, took first place at the regional level in the Informational Technology/Software category for his company, Travelsee.
