The SUNY Oneonta athletics department recently held its annual awards ceremony and honored its student athletes for their outstanding accomplishments in and out of the playing arena.

The SUNY Oneonta History Department faculty recognized 12 students for academic achievement and outstanding essay writing during an awards ceremony this spring.

A total of 14 new members were inducted into the SUNY Oneonta Alpha-Kappa-Iota chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society, during a ceremony on April 7.

Twenty-nine SUNY Oneonta students were inducted into SUNY Oneonta's chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the National Health Preprofessional Honor Society, this semester.

A total of 60 SUNY Oneonta students are studying abroad this spring through semester-long and academic-year programs in 15 countries.

Artwork by 73 students is featured in SUNY Oneonta's 2017 Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. On display through May 13 at the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery in the college's Fine Arts Center, the exhibition features more than 100 works by student artists. Featured artworks were chosen from an open jury process and works entered by the art faculty. Painting, drawing, sculpture, digital print, digital video and an assortment of mixed media make up this year's offerings.

On display through May 13 at the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery in the college's Fine Arts Center, the exhibition features more than 100 works by student artists. A total of 192 students received the SUNY Oneonta 2016-2017 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher. Student award winners receive a certificate, a gift card to the campus bookstore, and an invitation to attend the annual Susan Sutton Smith Lecture and reception. Dr. Florian Reyda, professor of biology, will deliver this year's Susan Smith Lecture titled, "Parasites, Evolution and Us," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in the Otsego Grille of the Morris Conference Center on campus.

SUNY Oneonta recognized 35 student athletes by inducting them into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during a luncheon held on April 6. To qualify for induction a student athlete must have achieved at least junior standing with a cumulative 3.4 grade point average while earning a varsity letter in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Each student athlete must also be of good moral character and have the endorsement of his/her coach and the Chapter President.

Four SUNY Oneonta seniors are among a select group of State University of New York students chosen to receive the 2017 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented the awards to the students during a reception in their honor Wednesday, April 5, at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.

Seventeen SUNY Oneonta students participated in the 2017 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 19-23. The Oneonta delegation represented South Africa.

Nine SUNY Oneonta students will present papers at the college's eighth annual New Critics: Undergraduate Literature and Composition Conference on Saturday, April 8. More than 20 students from 10 colleges and universities throughout the East Coast will present their scholarly work at the conference, which will feature a keynote address by Ben Saunders of the University of Oregon titled, "Wonder Woman in Bondage."

Senior Katie O'Gorman was selected as the SUNY Oneonta Athlete of the Week.

Senior Katie Flannery was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week in the SUNYAC.

Sophomore Andrew Helfman was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week in the SUNYAC.

Eleven SUNY Oneonta students spent their spring break volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Vero Beach, Fla.

Senior Cara Adams was selected as a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American.

Six SUNY Oneonta wrestlers were named to the ECWC All-Academic Team.

SUNY Oneonta's Hooked On Tonics a cappella group competed in an International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) Northeast Quarterfinal on Feb. 25 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The 14-member ensemble performed a set that included "All Time Low" by John Bellion, "I Want it That Way" by the Backstreet Boys and a Michael Jackson medley. "All Time Low" and "I Want it That Way" featured original arrangements by group member Sydney Kurnit, who is a sophomore at SUNY Oneonta.

Junior James Bethel and freshman Kevin Knox were named as NWCA Scholar All-Americans.

10 field hockey players have earned academic honors from the NFHCA.

Sophomore Dana Del Genio was selected as the Player of the Week in the SUNYAC.

Senior Amanda Graziano was selected as the Pitcher of the Week in the SUNYAC.

Sophomore Takoda Sitar was selected as the Pitcher of the Week in the SUNYAC.

Senior Mikey McElroy was selected to the NABC All-District second team in men's basketball.

Thirteen SUNY Oneonta students spent a week in New Orleans for a wetlands restoration service-learning project in the Lower 9th Ward.

Senior Mikey McElroy was selected to the All-SUNYAC first team in men's basketball.

Senior Lawrence Coleman was selected to the All-SUNYAC first team in men's basketball.

11 student athletes competed for the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team this winter.

SUNY Oneonta freshman basketball player Kevin Mackin was selected as the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.
