Esteban Castro's Three-Panel Mural Featured at SUNY Oneonta

SUNY Oneonta Senior Esteban Castro's "Angry King | Lonely King | The Beholder of Love," a three-panel mural, is featured at the Open Space Gallery on the SUNY Oneonta campus. Created over two weeks, Castro painted this 10 x 45-foot original work on-site. Referencing the long history of public murals and graffiti art, along with his personal experience in fashion design and drawing, he has created three unique pieces that speak to the self-harmful effects of unmitigated anger and the need for love and community to heal and grow. While reminiscent of masters like Basquiat and Herring, his style is distinct and includes consistent patterns like dashed outlining within steady outlines, crowns, and a "seeing heart" that make this mural recognizably his. "Angry King | Lonely King | The Beholder of Love" by Esteban Castro is on view now until Nov. 12.

SUNY Oneonta Students Perform With London's Philharmonia Orchestra

On Feb. 20, SUNY Oneonta students Jolie Gagnon (Music), Miguel Isbirian (Music Industry), and Ajare Malcolm (Music) sang a sold-out performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony no. 2 "Resurrection" with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus at the Royal Festival Hall, part of London's South Bank Centre. The performance was conducted by Czech Philharmonic Principal Guest Conductor, Jakub Hrusa, who is also the recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Hrusa's rising reputation secured an unexpected BBC Radio 3 recording of the performance, to be aired on Monday, March 9. The students spent 11 days in London, rehearsing and visiting important historical and cultural sites, musically prepared and led by Associate Professor of Music and Philharmonia Chorus member, Timothy Newton. The students were selected for this honor after submitting video auditions to the Chorus in December coached and accompanied in Dr. Adam Kent's Classical Collaborations course, and in voice lessons with Dr. Steve Markuson and Colby Thomas, chosen from among eight Oneonta students by Chorus Master, Gavin Carr. The Philharmonia Orchestra had just returned from a residency in Tokyo, and drew wide critical acclaim for this performance from several media outlets. The students' trip was supported, in part, by the Caroline '67 and David D'Antonio Student Travel for Excellence Fund.

Old Fine Arts banners replaced with student's designs

When the faded banners on the exterior of SUNY Oneonta's Fine Arts building were removed at the end of the spring semester, they were replaced with brand new ones designed by an art major from Colonie, NY. The college selected Briela Tollisen's banners through a competitive process developed by Facilities and the Art Department. The banner replacement project was an assignment for Tollisen's Advanced Graphic Design class, and the experience mimicked one of a professional artist responding to a call for proposals for a public work. Specifications for the banners were announced to students in October before a half dozen designs were selected for further consideration. The field was then narrowed to three. Finalists presented their work, from vision to production, to the college in November. After thoughtful discussion of the merits of each set of banners, the college settled on Tollisen's designs. ICG believes that each is a well-executed work that could stand on its own. As a series, the banners present a wide range of aesthetics that showcase the creativity that SUNY Oneonta students possess.

Student art featured in new gallery exhibits

Two new student art shows will open this week in the Project Space Gallery and the Martin Mullen Annex in SUNY Oneonta's Fine Arts Center. "Doodles" by Anthony Ferris will be displayed in the Martin-Mullen Annex Gallery (the gallery lobby area) and "Old Dogs New Tricks," an exhibition of oil paintings by Gerry Falco and Rich Page, will be located in the Project Space Gallery. "Doodles" consists of a series of silkscreen prints, etching prints and books of doodles in a display case. On the wall behind the case are hundreds of the doodles reproduced from the "Doodle" sketchbooks. In "Old Dogs New Tricks," Falco and Page display examples of portraiture and landscape. Page explores a range of portraits with personalities ranging from dark and dangerous to lighthearted expressions. Falco presents a series of landscape close-ups revealing seasonal changes celebrated with color, form and abstractions found in nature. The two very disparate styles work surprisingly well together in this two-person show.

Student Artwork Featured in New Exhibit

The latest exhibition at SUNY Oneonta's Project Space Gallery will feature the work of three student artists who have, through their artwork, explored the contrast in city and country lifestyles and the concept of vacationing in one place or the other as an "escape." The exhibit, called "[e]scape," features the artwork of Jessica Tyler, Tyler Burke and Henry Feist. It opened Nov. 29 with a reception at the Project Space Gallery and will run through Dec. 19. The show consists of a combination of silver-gelatin photographs and digital photographs ranging in size from 21 inches by 18 inches to 36 inches by 64 inches. In their combined artist statement, the students explained how their work explores the contrast between living in the city or country and visiting the city or country for a vacation. City dwellers often find summer homes in Oneonta, they explained, while Oneonta natives find themselves taking trips to explore the big city. Each reality is someone else's vacation. "Sometimes we forget what else is out there," the students wrote. "No matter which landscape you live in, whether it be the Catskill Mountains or one of the Five Boroughs of New York, the other always feels like an escape." "As the three of us prepare to graduate, we want to use this series as a means of exploring the contrasts in the lifestyles we've experienced and appreciating the good and bad of each one," the statement continues. "Even when things seem gray in the environment you're living in, there is always a burst of color that will follow. It's up to us to find our escapes."
