Students receive Richard Siegfried Student Award for Excellent GPA

Seventy SUNY Oneonta students received the Richard Siegfried Student Award this semester for earning a total GPA of 3.9 or higher. In order to be eligible to receive the Richard Siegfried Student Award, a student must be a full-time freshman or transfer student with a total GPA of 3.9 or higher. The award is named in memory of Richard K. Siegfried, SUNY Oneonta Professor of Theatre from 1958 until 1995. Professor Siegfried (or Sieg as generations of students fondly called him) epitomized excellence in his academic life, through imagination, meticulous scholarship and discipline, and through his expectation of the same pursuit of excellence in his students and colleagues. His dedication brought excellence to his work in such historical theater worlds as Aristophanes, Moliere, Ibsen, or Chekhov, to his rigorous study of the skills of voice and movement, and to his leadership in the imaginative creativity of improvisation.

Cindy Sosa Earns Lake Management Graduate Study Award

Cindy Sosa of Uniondale, NY earned the SOLitude Lake Management Graduate Study Award. SOLitude's $1,000 gift was awarded to support Sosa's pursuit of a Master of Science degree in Lake Management at SUNY Oneonta. SUNY is the only college in the United States that offers a master's program in Lake Management. As part of the master's program, degree recipients meet the requirements to apply for the prestigious designation of Certified Lake Manager (CLM) by the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS), an organization that brings scientists and professionals together to foster the management and protection of lakes and reservoirs. SOLitude Lake Management is a nationwide environmental firm committed to providing sustainable solutions that improve water quality, enhance beauty, preserve natural resources and reduce our environmental footprint.

SUNY Oneonta recognized more than 60 outstanding students with its 2020 Academic Achievement Awards. One to three students were chosen from each of the college's academic departments and programs. In addition to their excellent work in the classroom, students were honored for distinguishing themselves in many ways, including research, activism, mentoring, athletics, involvement in campus activities and volunteerism.

Four SUNY Oneonta Students Receive 2020 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

Four SUNY Oneonta students are among an elite group chosen to receive the 2020 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence is the highest honor that SUNY bestows upon students. It is presented annually to SUNY students who demonstrate academic excellence and integrate it with accomplishments in other areas, such as leadership, career achievement, campus involvement, athletics, community service, or creative and performing arts. Each year, SUNY campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews the accomplishments of exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor's Office for a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Since the Chancellor's Award program was implemented, 96 SUNY Oneonta students have received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. The four SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive the 2020 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence are Katherine Martinez-Munoz, Timothy Nolan, Alexa Amalbert and Daniel Ioos.

David Andrews Earns Lake Management Graduate Study Award

David Andrews of West Monroe, NY earned the first-ever SOLitude Lake Management Graduate Study Award. SOLitude's $1,000 gift was awarded to support Andrews' pursuit of a Master of Science degree in Lake Management at SUNY Oneonta. Another $1,000 was donated to support the Lake Management program, bringing SOLitude's total contribution to $2,000. "The Lake Management program at SUNY Oneonta has afforded me an incredible opportunity to learn in the field and gain knowledge and skills that will guide me for the rest of my career," Andrews said. "Donors like SOLitude Lake Management help make the program possible. Thank you for supporting future lake managers!" SUNY is the only college in the United States that offers a master's program in Lake Management. More than 100 graduates were selected to receive academic department honors for the fall 2019 semester. Graduating students who meet all degree and major requirements, who also have a 3.50 or higher major GPA, may be recommended by the department chair for department honors.

Four students receive 2019 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

Four SUNY Oneonta students are among 210 State University of New York students chosen to receive the 2019 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson presented the awards to the students during a reception in their honor today in Albany. "Today's award recipients emerged from their campuses this year as the top scholars, athletes, performers, and achievers, as well as a tremendous source of inspiration," said Chancellor Johnson. "The students being recognized today made the choice to become leaders on their campuses, prioritize their studies, and serve their communities. Congratulations to this year's awardees, and I applaud you for pursuing excellence in all that you do." The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence is the highest honor that SUNY bestows upon students. It is presented annually to SUNY students who demonstrate academic excellence and integrate it with accomplishments in other areas, such as leadership, career achievement, campus involvement, athletics, community service, or creative and performing arts. Each year, SUNY campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews the accomplishments of exemplary students. 196 Students Receive Susan Sutton Smith Award

A total of 196 students received the SUNY Oneonta 2018-2019 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher. Student award winners receive a certificate, a gift card to the campus bookstore, and an invitation to attend the annual Susan Sutton Smith Lecture and reception. Dr. Tracy Betsinger, associate professor of biological anthropology, will deliver this year's Susan Smith Lecture titled, "Babies Are Us: What Can We Learn from Fetuses and Infants from History and Prehistory," on Tuesday, April 9, 7 p.m. in the Otsego Grille, Morris Conference Center on campus.

Students receive Richard Siegfried Student Award for Excellent GPA

Fifty five SUNY Oneonta students received the Richard Siegfried Student Award this semester for earning a total GPA of 3.9 or higher. The students will receive their awards Dec. 4 during the Annual Richard Siegfried Lecture at the Morris Conference Center. Andrew Bottomley, Assistant Professor of Communication & Media, will deliver the annual Richard Siegfried Lecture titled, "Voices From Below: Audio Storytelling and the Politics of Experience." In order to be eligible to receive the Richard Siegfried Student Award, a student must be a full-time freshman or transfer student with a total GPA of 3.9 or higher. The award is named in memory of Richard K. Siegfried, SUNY Oneonta Professor of Theatre from 1958 until 1995. Students Selected as Robert Noyce Scholars

Ten students have been selected for SUNY Oneonta's Robert Noyce Scholars Program in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics. This program prepares talented science majors for successful careers as grade 7-12 science teachers in high-need, urban and rural schools. Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the program offers each Noyce Scholar approximately $20,000 in scholarships during his/her junior and senior years. In return, students commit to teaching for at least four years in high-need rural or urban school districts after graduating from SUNY Oneonta.

Four students receive 2018 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

Four SUNY Oneonta seniors are among 249 State University of New York students chosen to receive the 2018 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson presented the awards to the students during a reception in their honor Tuesday, April 10, at the Albany Capital Center. "I am immensely proud of these students, who have demonstrated academic excellence and dedication to enriching their campuses and communities," Johnson said. "From research publications in industry journals to volunteering in hospitals and local clinics to holding leadership roles at their institutions, I am inspired by each student we recognize today. Congratulations to all of the students receiving this year's award." The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence is the highest honor that SUNY bestows upon students. It is presented annually to SUNY students who demonstrate academic excellence and integrate it with accomplishments in other areas, such as leadership, career achievement, campus involvement, athletics, community service, or creative and performing arts. Since 1998 when the Chancellor's Award program was implemented, 88 SUNY Oneonta students have received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. The four SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive the 2018 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence are Kayla Belush, Daniel Prince, Jonelle Reyes and Anthony Vecere Jr.

31 Scholar Athletes Inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma

SUNY Oneonta recognized 35 student athletes by inducting them into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during a luncheon held on April 6. To qualify for induction a student athlete must have achieved at least junior standing with a cumulative 3.4 grade point average while earning two varsity letters in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Each student athlete must also be of good moral character and have the endorsement of his/her coach and the Chapter President.

Students Receive Richard Siegfried Student Award for Excellent GPA

Sixty one SUNY Oneonta students received the Richard Siegfried Student Award this semester for earning a total GPA of 3.9 or higher. The students received their awards Dec. 5 during the Annual Richard Siegfried Lecture at the Morris Conference Center. Dr. James Mackin, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, presented the student awards before Assistant Professor of Geography and Environmental Sustainability Dr. Tyra A. Olstad gave the Siegfried Lecture on "Stewardship and Sense of Place in the Adirondack High Peaks." SUNY Oneonta recognized 35 student athletes by inducting them into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, during a luncheon held on April 6.
