93 Business Students Travel to NYC to Network with Successful Alumni

Ninety three SUNY Oneonta students from SUNY Oneonta's School of Economics and Business traveled to the Big Apple on Oct. 25 for the college's annual Backpacks to Briefcases alumni networking trip. Students visited 21 well-established alumni at their Manhattan offices and heard about their experiences going from students to top executives. The event is designed to inspire students to jumpstart their careers by beginning to build their professional networks. It is funded by the Oneonta Student Association and the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association through charitable gifts to the Fund for Oneonta.

Biology students visit, present at Cancun conference

Six SUNY Oneonta students traveled to Cancun, Mexico last week to participate in the 93rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists. The students presented posters on the results of their parasitological research projects on host-parasite systems of Otsego Lake, or of marine stingray tapeworms. Several of the student research projects were supported in part by Student Research Grants from SUNY Oneonta. Student travel to these meetings was supported in part by the Caroline '67 and David D'Antonio Student Travel for Excellence Fund.

Students present papers at Philosophy Conference

Students from 17 colleges and universities gathered April 13-14 to showcase and discuss their research at the college's Morris Conference Center for the 23rd annual Undergraduate Philosophy Conference. Organized by SUNY Oneonta students, the conference featured a keynote lecture by Dr. Raymond Angelo Belliotti of SUNY Fredonia titled "Plato & Soul Searing Love." Twenty-one students from across the country were selected to present their scholarly work during the two-day conference. Initiated in 1995, the SUNY Oneonta Philosophy Conference has become one of the most respected events of its kind in the United States, hosting students from prestigious institutions such as Harvard University and from as far away as the University of Hawaii and University of Padua (Italy).

Student marketing club earns top honor at international conference

Forty members of SUNY OnMark, SUNY Oneonta's Chapter of the American Marketing Association, attended the American Marketing Association's 40th Annual International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, where they earned an impressive award and gained professional development. After a long drive, challenging competitions, and a year of hard work, the club was awarded 7th place in the 'Chapter of the Year' competition out of about 400 colleges and universities. They also received an honorable mention for the excellence of their website.

WONY Radio students visit New York City stations

On Friday, March 23, a group of 13 student members of WONY 90.9 FM, SUNY Oneonta's student-run radio station, took a field trip to New York City to visit major radio institutions and learn about the industry. There, they received private guided tours of New York Public Radio and iHeartMedia. It was a rare chance for students to get a behind-the-scenes peek at professional broadcasting studios, interact with veteran broadcasters and top industry executives, and learn about internship and career opportunities.

Pre-service teachers participate in area math conference

Oneonta was well-represented at the Hudson-Mohawk Valley Area Mathematics Conference at Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake High School on March 24. Eight SUNY Oneonta pre-service teachers took part, and Ray Siegrist, Secondary Education and Educational Technology, presented a session about collecting data and creating a model "Modeling Isn't Just for the Runway Anymore." The Hudson-Mohawk Valley Area Mathematics Association is an affiliate of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). The purpose of the association is to encourage interest in math and math education and further the cooperative study of issues regarding math education.

Music industry students attend California trade show

Twenty six SUNY Oneonta students attended The NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Show in Anaheim, Calif., from Jan. 25 to 28. The annual trade show is a The NAMM Show is a place for professionals in the music industry to explore and discover innovative new products being released in the new year. The students got a firsthand look at how music retail and music business go hand-in-hand, testing out the latest products from more than 7,000 brands, attending cutting-edge industry education sessions and demonstrations, and seeing lots of live performances.

Political science students take part in National Model UN

Fifteen SUNY Oneonta students enrolled in Political Science 280 participated in the 2018 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 18 to 22. The Oneonta delegation represented the country of Malaysia and earned an Honorable Mention award for remaining in character, participating in committee and properly using the rules of procedure.

Junior music industry major wins scholarship, attends California music conference

SUNY Oneonta junior and music industry major Daniel Reid had a rock-star experience last week at a global music products trade show in California, which he attended for free as the winner of a prestigious scholarship. Reid and 26 other SUNY Oneonta students attended The NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Show in Anaheim, Calif., from Jan. 25 to 28. Reid was the winner of the NAMM Foundation's competitive President's Innovation Award, a $600 stipend given each year to select college and university music students interested in exploring career opportunities in music performance and/or music business.

Nine Students to Present Papers at Literature Conference

Nine SUNY Oneonta students will present papers at the college's eighth annual New Critics: Undergraduate Literature and Composition Conference on Saturday, April 8. More than 20 students from 10 colleges and universities throughout the East Coast will present their scholarly work at the conference, which will feature a keynote address by Ben Saunders of the University of Oregon titled, "Wonder Woman in Bondage."

Music Industry Major Michael Sanbeg Wins National Award

SUNY Oneonta senior Michael Sanbeg was one of 60 college students from across the country selected to receive the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation's prestigious President's Innovation Award. The annual award for outstanding college music students exploring careers in music education, music business and/or music products provided a stipend for Sanbeg to attend The 2017 NAMM Show from Jan. 19-22, 2017, in Anaheim, Calif.

Fourteen SUNY Oneonta music industry students got a look at the latest products in the music industry during the 2017 National Music Merchants Association Show in Anaheim, Calif., from Jan. 19-22. The annual global music products tradeshow featured 1,800 exhibits and more than 6,000 brands of sound, lighting and recording gear; instruments; sheet music; gadgets and more.

16 Students Present Papers at Literature and Composition Conference

Sixteen SUNY Oneonta students presented papers at the college's seventh annual New Critics: Undergraduate Literature and Composition Conference on Saturday, April 9. Students from five colleges and universities presented their scholarly work in 22 sessions at the conference, which featured a keynote address by Dr. Jinnny Huh, associate professor at the University of Vermont, titled, "Arresting Eyes: Race Detection in a Post-Racial America."

Theatre major attends national conference

SUNY Oneonta theatre major Akeem Celestine of Schenectady, NY, was one of 12 young artists from across the country selected for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) Gateway mentorship program. The program part of USITT's Diversity and Inclusion Initiative to foster diversity, equity and inclusion in the backstage arts. It paired 12 emerging artists with professional mentors at the USITT Conference & Stage Expo in Salt Lake City from March 16-19.

The conference featured a keynote address titled "Incarceration Rates in the U.S." by Dr. Peter Enns, associate professor in the Department of Government and executive director of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University.

Graduates to Present at 37th Annual Thomas Wolfe Society Conference

Three May 2015 SUNY Oneonta graduates--Amanda Augesen, Sarah Cummings, and Caitlyn Kuzmich--will present research at the 37th annual Thomas Wolfe Society conference in Albany from May 22-24. Their independent research focuses on Thomas Wolfe's two most celebrated novels, "You Can't Go Home Again" and "Look Homeward, Angel." The conference will attract presenters from all over the United States, as well as Europe.

16 Students Represent Oneonta at National Model UN

Sixteen SUNY Oneonta students participated in two delegations at the 2016 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 20-24. Two students represented Denmark, and 14 represented Nicaragua. The Nicaragua delegation received an Honorable Mention award for its success in remaining in character, participating in committee, and properly using the rules of procedure.
