Timothy Distler Attends SUNY Oneonta Emerging Leaders Conference

Timothy Distler of Amityville, NY, participated in SUNY Oneonta's Emerging Leaders conference in November 2014. Distler, whose major is Business Economics, attended educational sessions led by faculty, professional staff, alumni and community members on topics such as: leadership development, assessment and evaluation, event management, meaningful interpersonal relationships, collaboration, social responsibility, effective communication, multicultural competency, intellectual growth and clarified values.

These topic areas are core competencies outlined in the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) "Competency Guide for College Student Leaders" document. Some of the programs students attended included: "Self-Care and Stress Relief," "Spirituality and Leadership," "What it Means to be a Leader at SUNY Oneonta," "The Public Presentation: A Discussion on Organization, Delivery, and Audience Retention," and many more.

Emerging Leaders fulfills the Foundations of Leadership credit for LEAD@Oneonta, a comprehensive leadership program based on current research and guidelines from the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.The program is designed to provide individual students an opportunity to explore leadership in a manner that gives them great breadth while allowing them to focus on areas that are important to them personally. All students can choose to participate in the LEAD program, which aims to better prepare them for life after college by providing a comprehensive picture of the skills needed to be a good leader.
