2018 Feb 12

Two males and one female from the SUNY Oneonta cross-country programs have been recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom by the USTFCCCA. The USTFCCCA released its list of honorees this past Friday that included 668 student athletes from NCAA Division III.

Also recognized was both the men's and women's teams for their combined academic excellence. The women, with their 3.17 GPA, were one of 221 teams honored while the men, with their 3.10 GPA, were one of 167 teams honored. For the women, it was the tenth consecutive year being recognized while the men are being recognized for the seventh time and first since 2014.

The Red Dragon women were one of seven squads from the SUNYAC to be recognized while the men were one of five.

To be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, a team must have competed and compiled a score at its NCAA Regional championship meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.10 cumulative grade point average as a team.

The three individuals recognized included senior Meghan Holzwarth, of Central Square, NY, and sophomores Ethan McDonald, of Schenectady, NY, and Matthew Palmer, of Gansevoort, NY. Holzwarth is earning honors for a third time while McDonald and Palmer have earned their first honor.

Individual honorees must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or greater and must have finished among the top 25 percent at their respective regional championships.

McDonald and Palmer helped to lead the men to a second place finish at the SUNYAC cross country championships last fall. McDonald finished in tenth place overall to earn second team All-Conference honors. At the NCAA Atlantic Region championships, Palmer ran a personal best time of 25:53 to help the men finish 11th overall.

Holzwarth was Oneonta's top finisher at both the SUNYAC and Atlantic Region championships. She finished 19th at the conference meet and 58th at the Atlantic Region meet.
