Taylor Galano Among 92 SUNY Oneonta Students Inducted Into Honor Society

Taylor Galano of Verbank, NY, was among 92 new members inducted into the SUNY Oneonta chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the national scholastic honor society for college freshmen, during a ceremony in the Sanford Auditorium of the college's Instructional Resource Center on Sunday, May 5.

Galano is majoring in Human Biology at SUNY Oneonta.

With 330 chapters nationwide, Phi Eta Sigma promotes excellence through recognition programs and scholarship competitions. New members qualify by achieving grade-point averages of at least 3.5 during their first year in college.

Phi Eta Sigma, one of the longest-standing freshman honor societies in the country, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Chartered in 1994, SUNY Oneonta's chapter is advised by Dr. Kenneth Johnson, Associate Professor of Geography.

The induction ceremony was conducted by Dr. Kenneth Johnson, Faculty Advisor; Katie Sheehan, Chapter President; Allison Ryley, Vice President; Carrie Safford, Secretary; and Kimberly Brooks, Treasurer. The guest speaker was Dr. Steven Perry, Vice President for Student Development. Each inductee was awarded a certificate and a membership key issued by the national headquarters of Phi Eta Sigma.
