Sarah Cottone Receives Academic Achievement Award

2016 May 31

Sarah Cottone of East Setauket, NY, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2016 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.

Cottone received the Women's and Gender Studies Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

A psychology major and double minor in women’s & gender studies and mathematics, Cottone has balanced academic excellence with athletics and service. A member of Triota, the national women’s and gender studies honor society, and Chi Alpha Sigma, the student athlete honor society, Cottone has consistently made the dean’s list, as well as the SUNYAC All-Academic List and SUNYAC Commissioner’s List. Cottone was a member of the women’s cross country and track & field teams and one of seven Oneonta athletes who advanced to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. She also served as president of the Gender & Sexuality Alliance. In fall 2015, Cottone worked with Dr. Charlene Christie on an independent research study on sexuality while also serving on the head committee for the third annual SUNY Pride Conference, which was held on the Oneonta campus.
