Samantha Ayers Selected to Receive Scholarship

2016 Nov 11

Samantha Ayers of Johnson, NY, has been selected by the SUNY Oneonta Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences faculty to receive the P. Jay Fleisher Scholarship Award. Ayers, who is pursuing a degree in geology, was honored at the department's annual Majors' Night in October.

The P. Jay Fleisher Scholarship Award, made possible through the generosity of P. Jay Fleisher, emeritus faculty member, is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student majoring in geology or water resources. It is meant to provide financial support for students who, under the guidance of a faculty mentor, engage in field-oriented studies and/or research.

Now in its 40th year, Majors' Night offers the department's undergraduates the opportunity to network with alumni who return to campus for the event, where they share their experiences and offer advice to current students.

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is one of five academic departments within SUNY Oneonta's School of Natural and Mathematical Sciences. The college is a founding member of the Chenango-Delaware-Otsego Workforce Investment Board's STEM Leadership Council, which promotes programs that stimulate young people's interest in science, technology, engineering and math careers, and establishes educational pathways between high schools, colleges and workplaces.
