2017 Jan 12

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to announce the winners of its inaugural Scholar Athletes of the Year. Each season the conference will recognize student-athletes for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and in their respective sports.

Earning honors from SUNY Oneonta was senior Rachael Shine of Clifton Park for women's cross country.

To be eligible for the SUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award students must prove both academic and athletic excellence by obtaining a 3.30 overall GPA, by being a starter or significant reserve for their team and they must be at least a sophomore.

Shine is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Educational Psychology and is currently carrying a 3.69 GPA through the fall semester.

This past fall season, Shine led the women's cross country team to its fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA championships where the squad finished seventh overall. Shine was the top finisher for Oneonta in 23rd place, which earned her All-American status.

At the SUNYAC championship, Shine placed third overall to earn First Team All-Conference honors. She went onto earn All-Region accolades for a third straight year after finishing 17th overall, as the Red Dragons finished second overall to earn the automatic berth to the NCAA championship.

A multiple-time track & field All-American, Shine has earned honors academically as a USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete two times each in cross country and track & field. Last spring, she was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, which is the National Student Athlete Honor Society.
