Peter Booth of Hamden, NY, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2017 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.

Booth received the Geography and Environmental Sustainability Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

Booth was awarded the Susan Sutton Smith Award for Academic Excellence in addition to two academic scholarships. He served as a teaching assistant for two geography courses and gave a guest lecture as well as led a laboratory exercise in the Aerial Photographic Interpretation course. Booth also delivered several lectures and presentations for the Otsego Lake Association related to spatial ecology and the use of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, aka drones). Booth conducts related research such as land use change analysis, 3D modeling and best practices of UAV technologies. He also completed a research internship at SUNY Oneonta’s Biological Field Station, providing aerial surveys of sediment plumes and presenting his research findings. In addition to co-presenting some of his research at the GSA (Geological Society of America) meeting, he presented his own work at SUNY Oneonta’s Student Research and Creative Activity Day, where he received an honorable mention award in the student competition for best research poster.
