Patrick McKeage Among 16 SUNY Oneonta Students Recognized at National Model UN Conference

2012 Apr 25

Patrick McKeage of Binghamton was part of a 16-member SUNY Oneonta student delegation recognized with an Honorable Mention Award at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from April 1- 5. The conference attracted over 2,000 students representing more than 100 colleges and universities from around the world, and only the top 10 percent of participants achieved this recognition.

The Oneonta delegation represented Ecuador at the conference. Over the course of the spring semester, students prepared for the simulation by learning about Ecuador's international and domestic politics, contemporary issues such as sustainable development, the small arms trade and human trafficking, and the United Nations' committee system and operating procedures. While in New York City, the students received a briefing from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Ecuador to the United Nations. Once at the conference, they debated proposals put forth to address these issues from the perspective of diplomats of their assigned country.

SUNY Oneonta's Model UN delegation is advised by Dr. Brett Heindl of the college's Department of Political Science. A liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus, SUNY Oneonta features outstanding and accessible faculty, students committed to academics and community service, exceptional technology, a modern fieldhouse and athletic facilities, and a beautiful campus. The college enrolls 6,000 students in its 70 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate programs.
