Myles Moore of Mahopac Wins Science Scholarship at SUNY Oneonta

2013 Oct 29

SUNY Oneonta announced that Myles Moore of Mahopac is the recipient of the college's P. Jay Fleisher Scholarship Award, given each year to a student within the college's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Moore, who is pursuing a degree in water resources, was honored at the department's annual Majors' Night on Oct. 9.

Now in its 37th year, Majors' Night offers the department's undergraduates the opportunity to network with alumni who return to campus for the event, where they share their experiences and offer advice to current students. The P. Jay Fleisher Scholarship Award recognizes a full-time undergraduate studying geology or water resources and is made possible through the generosity of P. Jay Fleisher, emeritus faculty.

"Majors' Night is one of the most longstanding departmental events on our campus, having been attended literally by generations of aspiring scientists and scientific educators," said Dean of Natural and Mathematical Sciences Venkat Sharma. "With the current emphasis on the STEM disciplines, an area in which SUNY Oneonta really shines, it is more important than ever that we acknowledge students like Myles Moore and encourage their progress toward careers rooted in the sciences."

Earlier this year, SUNY Oneonta founded its School of Natural and Mathematical Sciences to give greater focus to disciplines and careers in those areas. The college also is a founding member of the Chenango-Delaware-Otsego Workforce Investment Board's STEM Leadership Council, which promotes programs that stimulate young people's interest in science, technology, engineering and math careers, and establishes educational pathways between high schools, colleges, and workplaces.
