Micaelina Velardi of New Berlin to Direct Two Plays at SUNY Oneonta

2016 Mar 22

SUNY Oneonta senior Micaelina Velardi of New Berlin, NY, will direct "The Marriage Proposal" and "The Brute," two one-act comedies written by Anton Chekhov, this weekend.

Performances will be in SUNY Oneonta's Hamblin Theater at 8 p.m. March 24-26 and at 2 p.m. March 27.

A night of one-act farces awaits! These situation, Russian comedies bring a nonsensical, lighthearted evening of fun. "The Marriage Proposal" intertwines an aging, sturdy farm girl named Natasha and her hypochondriac, well-dressed suitor, Lomov, who, despite all the ailments he believes he has, is determined to propose marriage to her even if it means heart attacks, fainting spells, and the battle of land and dog. If Lomov can get past the quarreling, "The Marriage Proposal" might actually have a proposal.

"The Brute" follows a widow of seven months who is determined to melodramatically prove her loyalty to her deceased husband. When a man comes seeking payment for the debt owed to him by her late husband, a battle of wits, vodka and seduction ensues.

Velardi is majoring in theatre with a minor in dance. She is a member of the Mask and Hammer theatre club, Korean Cultural Club and Apollo Music Club. Last year, she won a Student Research & Creative Activity Award for her work designing masks and puppets for the theatre club's production of "Nagamandala."

"The Marriage Proposal" and "The Brute" are produced by the Mask and Hammer Theatre Club, with funding by the Student Association. Tickets for general admission are $5, or $3 with a Student ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Hunt College Union, or online at tickets.oneonta.edu.
