Matthew Hartwell Receives Academic Achievement Award

Matthew Hartwell of Mount Vision, NY, was one of 50 outstanding SUNY Oneonta seniors selected to receive a 2015 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive awards.

Hartwell received the Sociology Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must be a senior with a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in an academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

Hartwell has been an active scholar as a student in the Sociology-Preprofessional program. He has participated in an independent study in Sociology and Literature, and served as a Teaching Assistant for Theories and Perspectives in Sociology and Sociology 390 Senior Seminar. He completed a research assistantship with Dr. Brian Lowe, competed on the college's award-winning 2015 National Model UN team, and served as a research assistant for SUNY Oneonta's Big Data project. He also participated in a panel discussion at the New York State Political Science Conference at SUNY Plattsburgh this spring, and he has served as a peer tutor. Hartwell has been selected to receive several scholarships and received a SUNY Oneonta Student Research Grant for a project titled "Investigating Hashtag Activism."
