Marina Seidel Receives Academic Achievement Award
2017 May 25
Marina Seidel of Windsor, NY, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2017 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.
Seidel received the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department award.
To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.
Seidel has been very active in student research, working with Dr. Jacqueline Bennett to study the electrochemical and photochemical properties of imines as candidates for organic light-emitting diodes and as metal ion sensors in water samples. She gave two presentations at separate National American Chemical Society meetings and received a student research grant for these projects. She has also served as a tutor for biology and a teaching assistant for organic chemistry courses. Other honors include the Oneonta Presidential Scholarship, the Chemistry and Biochemistry Departmental Scholarship and the Chemistry and Biochemistry Award in Biochemistry. In preparation for a career in medicine, she is CPR certified and is a graduate of the New Visions Health Care Academy at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. Seidel has been accepted to and will attend medical school next year.
