Local Athletes selected to All-Conference Team

2017 Nov 9

The State University of New York Athletic Conference announced today its All-Conference Team for women's soccer. Picking up honors amongst the three teams that were selected by the conference coaches were five players from SUNY Oneonta.

Leading the way for the Red Dragons was junior Seaver Lipshie (Port Jefferson) who was the lone First Team selection. Junior Julie Steinhauer (East Syracuse) and senior Emily Opalinski (East Amherst) were selected to the Second Team while senior Amanda Roney (Schoharie) and junior Jess Downin (Franklin) earned Third Team honors. Both Opalinski and Roney are earning All-Conference honors for a second consecutive year.

Lipshie started the first 16 games of the season before an injury forced her to miss the final three matches. As a midfielder, she contributed one goal and four assists for six points. Her four assists were tied with Steinhauer and Downin for the team lead.

Steinhauer had a breakout season offensively leading Oneonta in scoring this season with seven goals and 18 points. Steinhauer had entered the 2017 season with one goal through her first two years. Two of her seven goals this fall were game-winners.

Opalinski, who was a Third Team selection in 2016, started all 19 games this season as a defender. This season she tallied seven points on two goals and three assists. In her three seasons with Oneonta she started all but one game and finished with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points.

Downin came on in the second half of the season when the Red Dragons ran off seven straight wins. Over the final seven games of the season including the two games in the SUNYAC tournament, she scored four goals and added three assists for 11 points. She registered a pair of game-winners including the winner in overtime against Potsdam in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

Roney started all 19 games in the back this fall after playing up front during her first two seasons. Roney still contributed a pair of goals and pair of assists and finished her career with 10 goals and four assists for 24 points. Four of her 10 goals were game-winners.

The Red Dragons finished the season 8-10-1 overall while advancing to the semifinals of the SUNYAC tournament.
