Kevin Stearns Participates in National Model United Nations

2016 Mar 28

Kevin Stearns of Schenectady, NY, represented SUNY Oneonta at the 2016 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 20-24.

Oneonta had two delegations at the conference, which brings together more than 5,000 university students from around the world to discuss global concerns in a real-world context. Two Oneonta students represented Denmark, and 14 represented Nicaragua. The Nicaragua delegation received an Honorable Mention award for its success in remaining in character, participating in committee, and using the rules of procedure properly.

Students prepared for the simulation by learning about Denmark's and Nicaragua's international and domestic politics, contemporary issues, and the United Nations' committee system and operating procedures. Once at the conference, they debated proposals put forth to address these issues from the perspective of diplomats of their assigned country.

By discussing and debating current world issues from the perspectives of the countries they represent, students gain a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN and develop skills in diplomacy and compromise.

SUNY Oneonta's Model UN delegation is advised by Dr. Brett Heindl, associate professor of political science. Dr. Richard Barberio, chair and associate professor of political science, accompanied the students on the trip.
