2017 May 25

Kayonga Muganza of Kigali, Rwanda, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2017 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.

Muganza received the Music Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

An international student who majored in music industry, Muganza has been a campus leader who contributed to the cultural and social life of the campus in many ways. He co-founded the Oneonta Hip Hop Collective and was a member of the Songwriters Club, Music Industry Club, International Student Organization, Pan-African Student Organization, Poetry Slam Association and Grammy-U. He was also a DJ for WONY, the student radio station; worked as a campus tour guide; and regularly volunteered for the Office of New Student Services, making new students feel welcome.
