Kayla Slater Recognized for Community Service

2015 May 29

Kayla Slater of Moravia, NY, was among 47 members of the SUNY Oneonta Class of 2015 who received Senior Service Awards recognizing their commitment to volunteerism. Seniors who completed at least 350 hours of service through the college's Center for Social Responsibility and Community (CSRC) were recognized during a reception in May.

Collectively, these students volunteered 39,796 hours in activities such as fundraising, helping in local school classrooms, tutoring and serving as emergency medical technicians. Overall, 549 members of the Class of 2015 logged a total of 56,566 volunteer hours during their time at SUNY Oneonta.

Slater logged 507.5 hours of service in activities including flood relief, working with the elderly and fundraising.

More than 20 percent of SUNY Oneonta students donate time to a local organization or cause through the CSRC. As a result, SUNY Oneonta contributes over 50,000 hours of service annually to nearly 100 nonprofit agencies in Oneonta and beyond. In recognition of the college's civic partnerships and service learning activities, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching awarded SUNY Oneonta its Community Engagement Classification in 2011.
