Julia Cocchi Receives Academic Achievement Award

Julia Cocchi of Northport, NY, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2017 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.

Cocchi received the Health and Fitness Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

Cocchi has done extensive volunteer work in areas related to health and fitness. She served as an Emergency Medical Technician and crew chief for the Oneonta State Emergency Squad and has volunteered with and shadowed physical therapists at Chestnut Park Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta, Stony Brook Hospital and Variety Child Learning Center in Syosset. She also interned at Robert Morris University, working with Division I student-athletes in the strength and conditioning facility and observing and assisting their physical therapist in injury prevention for the men's and women's basketball teams. Cocchi received the Susan Sutton Smith Award for Academic Excellence (2014-2015), the Helen and Michael Casper Fellowship Award (2016) and the Arshavir Hewsenian & The Kamandjian Families Scholarship (2016-2017). She is a member of the Beta Beta Beta biology honor society and the Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-health honor society, and she has been active in the Pre-Health Society student club, the Biology Club and the American Red Cross Club.
