Jillian Young Receives Academic Achievement Award

Jillian Young of Sidney, NY, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2017 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.

Young received the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

In addition to several college scholarships for academic excellence, Young has received three scholarships from the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. She is a past president of the SUNY Oneonta Meteorology Club and a member of the Earth & Atmospheric Sciences Department Student Advisory Council. In January 2017, she assisted geology instructors for a capstone course field trip to Death Valley. A certified National Weather Service Skywarn Spotter who has completed two National Weather Service internships at Binghamton and LaCrosse, Wis., Young has forecasted on the meteorology web page and for varsity athletic events. She served as a planner for the American Meteorological Society (AMS) 2014 summer meeting and presented findings of her own original scientific research on lightning in severe thunderstorms at the 97th annual meeting of the AMS in Seattle. She also presented at the 42nd annual Northeastern Storm Conference in Saratoga Springs. Young was one of four SUNY Oneonta students chosen to receive the 2017 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.
