Eli Cooperman Participates in National Model UN

2017 Apr 6

Eli Cooperman of Dix Hills, NY, represented SUNY Oneonta at the 2017 National Model United Nations Conference in New York City from March 19-23. The Oneonta delegation represented South Africa.

Cooperman is majoring in Political Science at SUNY Oneonta.

Over the course of two conferences, National Model United Nations-New York brings together more than 5,000 university students from around the world to talk about global concerns in a real-world context. Approximately 60 percent of the delegates now come from abroad, reflecting a real international flair. By discussing and debating current world issues from the perspectives of the countries they represent, students gain a better understanding of the inner workings of the UN and develop skills in diplomacy and compromise.

Oneonta students prepared for the simulation by learning about South Africa's international and domestic politics, contemporary issues, and the United Nations' committee system and operating procedures. Once at the conference, they received a mission briefing from South African diplomats and debated proposals put forth to address these issues from the perspective of diplomats of their assigned country.

SUNY Oneonta's Model UN delegation is advised by Dr. Rob Compton, professor of political science and Africana and Latino Studies.
