Daniela Gutierrez Attends Student Diversity & Leadership Conference

2015 Mar 11

Daniela Gutierrez of Hampton Bays, NY, participated in SUNY Oneonta's fourth annual Student Diversity & Leadership Conference on Feb. 21. The conference is organized by the college's Multicultural Student Council, Office of Student Diversity and Advocacy, and Office of Equity and Inclusion. More than 60 SUNY Oneonta students, faculty and staff attended the conference as participants or volunteers, and the conference drew additional attendees from the Oneonta community and neighboring colleges.

The theme for the one-day conference was "A Different World," inspired by the '80s/'90s television sitcom. Session topics ranged from "Multiracial Families: Conscious Connections" to "Would Katniss Want to be called a 'Strong Female Character'?" Dr. Leigh-Anne Francis, SUNY Oneonta assistant professor of Africana and Latino Studies, presented the keynote address, titled "Surviving Whiteness in the Ivory Tower." The day culminated in a screening of the film "Dear White People," followed by discussion.
