Daniel Ioos selected as an Academic All-American

2017 Dec 5

SUNY Oneonta sophomore Daniel Ioos of Wappingers Falls earned a trio of academic honors this fall for his outstanding performance in the classroom. His accolades were highlighted by being selected by CoSIDA as an Academic All-American , which recognizes academic and athletic accomplishments. Ioos was also the recipient of the SUNYAC Elite 20 Award for men's soccer, which goes to the student athlete with the highest GPA at the conference championship site.

"Daniel encompasses all the values we look for in a Division III student-athlete," stated Head Coach Iain Byrne. "He is a true leader on and off the field and he involves himself in various campus and community activities, is popular in the locker room and across the campus. All our best captains have led by example, and Dan is cut from that mold and we will be counting on his leadership in the next two years."

Ioos has been a starting player for Oneonta during his first two seasons with the men's soccer program, which has made consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. This past fall, he started 16 of the 18 games he played in and contributed a pair of assists.

Academically, Ioos carries a 4.0 GPA majoring in Business Economics. He has received the Provost's, Susan Sutton Smith and Richard Siegfried Awards for Academic Excellence along with being named to the SUNYAC Scholar Honor Roll.

The Red Dragons finished the season with an overall record of 15-2-3 while capturing the SUNYAC title. Oneonta qualified for the NCAA Tournament where they advanced to the second round.

About the Academic All-America Program

To be eligible for nomination at the district level, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

A student athlete is eligible for the national ballot only if he/she is named to the first team in one of the eight CoSIDA districts. National Voting in each Division is open to all dues paying members of CoSIDA along with the CoSIDA Board of Directors and past presidents.

The Division III Academic All-America program is supported financially by the NCAA Division III national governance structure. The funding assists CoSIDA with the handling of the awards fulfillment aspects for all the DIII Academic All-America team programs.

This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
