Phi Eta Sigma, one of the longest-standing freshman honor societies in the country, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. Chartered in 1994, the chapter at SUNY Oneonta is advised by Dean of Science and Social Science Dr. Julie D. Freeman.

The college enrolls 6,000 students in its 69 undergraduate majors and ten graduate programs.
