Chris Mackin Directs Federico Garcia Lorca Drama at SUNY Oneonta

2015 Mar 24

SUNY Oneonta senior theatre major Chris Mackin of Merrick, NY, will direct four performances of "The House of Bernarda Alba," a drama written by Federico Garcia Lorca. Performances will be held in the college's Hamblin Theater on Thursday, March 26, Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, at 8 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. March 29.

Lorca wrote "The House of Bernarda Alba" in 1930s Spain, a heightened period of female repression. After the death of her husband, Bernarda is left in charge of her five daughters. As opposed to alleviating the strict rules of the former patriarch, Bernarda enforces an even more brutal code of conduct in her home. The daughters must suffer eight years of mourning after the funeral, but their secret desires cannot be quelled as easily as Bernarda hopes.

"The House of Bernarda Alba" is produced by SUNY Oneonta's Mask and Hammer theatre club, with funding by the Student Association. Tickets are $5 (general admission) or $3 with a student ID. Tickets can be purchased at Hunt Union, online at tickets.oneonta.edu, or one hour before the show at the box office in the Fine Arts Building.
