Becky Fildes Receives Academic Achievement Award

Becky Fildes of Red Hook, NY, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2016 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.

Fildes received the Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

Fildes has been named to the provost’s list or the dean’s list every semester of her time at Oneonta. In fall 2013, she received the Susan Sutton Smith Award for Academic Excellence and a Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences Book Award. She was inducted into the Zeta Rho chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, the national earth and atmospheric science honors society, in fall 2014. In spring 2015, Fildes had the opportunity to complete an independent study under the advisement of Dr. Toke L. Knudsen. As a two-year member of the women’s soccer team and a four-year member of the women’s lacrosse team, she was named to the SUNYAC All-Academic Team during each season she played, and to the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List for three seasons. In spring 2015, she was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the national college athlete honor society. Flides also achieved the Silver Level in the college’s Leadership Education and Development program.
