Anna Lammers Offering Free Help with Income Taxes Through Community Program

2015 Mar 17

Anna Lammers of New Rochelle, NY, is volunteering through a United Way program to offer free tax return assistance to area residents this tax season.

A total of 39 students from SUNY Oneonta's School of Economics and Business have become certified by the Internal Revenue Services to help families prepare simple tax forms through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Residents of Delaware and Otsego counties who earned less than $53,000 in 2014 may be eligible for this free service, which is offered through the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties CA$H (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) program.

The SUNY Oneonta students will help taxpayers fill out federal and state tax forms and determine whether they qualify for special credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Credit for the Elderly and education credits. Services are offered, by appointment, three days a week through April 15 at two Oneonta locations: the parish house at the First United Methodist Church on the corner of Church and Chestnut Streets and the Huntington Memorial Library next door.

This is the second year of the partnership, which is coordinated at SUNY Oneonta by Management, Marketing and Information Systems department Lecturer William "Jeff" Weinell.

The CA$H Coalition of Delaware and Otsego Counties is led by the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties in collaboration with Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties, CDO Workforce, Fidelis Care, SEFCU, Delaware Opportunities, the New York State Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance, New York State Tax & Finance and the Internal Revenue Service.

Appointments for this free service may be made through Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties at (607) 432-0061.
