2016 May 31

Alexia Mohabir of Bronx, NY, was one of 54 outstanding SUNY Oneonta students selected to receive a 2016 Academic Achievement Award this spring. Each academic department or program selected one to three outstanding seniors to receive the award.

Mohabir received the Art Department award.

To be considered for the award, a student must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 in his or her major and must demonstrate exceptional academic improvement over four semesters, as well as excellence in research; leadership and involvement in department, campus and community activities; and/or participation in academic and/or professional situation outside the college.

Mohabir is passionate about animation and storytelling and runs a video game art blog on Tumbler that has over 14,000 followers. Her interests include visiting art and history museums, drawing and creating stories, and writing poetry and collaborating with friends to create stories and video game concepts. She also does freelance work designing logos and information-design graphics; this spring she collaborated with the Senior Sociology Seminar to create visually represented data sets from Twitter on controversial current events. She also exhibited artwork in the 2016 Juried Student Art Show. A dean’s list student since fall 2013, Mohabir was a winner of the annual Maynard Redfield Essay Contest and has been a member of the Computer Art Club, the Korean Cultural Club and the Japanese Society for All.
